you see what happens when you use the wrong tire with the swing
axel transmission.
The only way you can get even tire wear is to weld the
suspension up solid. If you get the torsion bars adjusted for the
exact weight you will be running, then every time the suspension
works the tire will apply pressure to the inside or the outside of
the tread. The Swing Axel Suspension must have a tire with a crown
or radius. To really work on a hard surface the radius of the
tread should equal the radius the suspension is moving.
On most cars the spring plate gap in top right photo would be
about correct, but on this trike the weight of driver &
passenger is to heavy and extreme tire wear is on the inside. A
stiffer spring plate setting might help a little but the wide flat
tread is always going to be fighting the suspension.
Some shops crank up the torsion bars extra tight and then
weld up the lower stop to hold the swing axel straight. This is
just one step from having the solid suspension. If you must run
these big wide tires the switch to the IRS suspension.
How to Adjusting your torsion bars
--> *Information
One of the biggest improvements to the Swing Axel
suspension when running off road is to build up the lower spring
plate stop. (normally about 1/8" to 3/16") This keep the
tire from tucking in at the bottom when the car becomes light or
in a hard corner. Yes it decreases the wheel travel but it
does reduce the tendency of the car to role over in hard
corners. We also recommend the spring plate straps.
