Question---> Need two special Taps for my VW. One to clean the Loctite out of the end of the crank and make sure the threads are OK and the other to chase the threads in the rear wishbone where the back transmission mount bolts to the frame horns. I could just grind the last couple of threads out of the Tran. mount holes but still need to clean the crank threads. Do you know of any one who rents these taps. I priced the taps and hate to spend the money for something I would only use one time.  Dave

Answer---> Yes we know what you mean about the cost of some of  the special taps. What we have done in the past is make the tap out of an old bolt or gland nut. Here is a photo of our gland nut tap. We just grind the slots as shown. This will easily clean the threads out of a lot of cranks and will even correct some banged up threads. We always replace gland nuts on every rebuild so our supply of old gland nuts is unlimited.
We have ground the wish bone bolts the same way to clean up buggered threads and then used the same bolt to mount the trany mounting strap with no problems. We grind the notch a lot less and just the last 5 or 6 threads. When using the stock mild steel bolt you can use a product called "Kasenite" available from Brownells Inc.  200South Front St., Montezuma, Iowa 501714 50171  This is a case hardening compound that when used properly, hardens mild steel to a depth of about .010" All that is needed is a propane torch to heat the bolt and then the taping end is plunged into the Kasenite. This can be repeated a second time for increased hardness depth.
We have also filed a grove in some odd ball nuts to clean threads, but this requires a nut of harder material and might take 3 or 4 depending on how bad the threads are.  Hope this helps.  Vic
