Question---> I have installed a external oil cooler on a '74  1600cc motor in a Dune Buggy,  I also added a in-line oil filter at the same time. My
question is, is there any particular order I should run the oil lines in? (i.e. should I run the lines to the filter first and then the cooler and then back to the motor or vise versa? Should I just forget the in-line filter all together?  I did add a new pressure valve to increase the oil pressure  for the added cooler, filter and lines. The cooler sits  above the motor should I hook up the line going into the  cooler at the top or the bottom of the cooler? Does it make  any difference?  I'd very much appreciate any help on this or any web sites that show the proper installation of the external oil cooler (I haven't been able to find any). Todd

Answer---> The normal way is to go Filter then cooler (Unless it is a very hi-performance race motor) In case of a motor blow-up you want the filter to catch the trash before interning the cooler. Mount the cooler so when the motor is turned off the oil will not run back into the case. The cooler inlet at the bottom and the outlet on top. The best place to mount the cooler is in front of the fan inlet. The fan is blowing a lot of air and if you mount it up on the buggy the only time it will properly cool is when the buggy speed is like 65/70 mph. Don't consider an electric fan to supply enough air. You would need a about a 10hp DC motor to move the proper amount of air. You might see race buggies running the cooler up on the frame but they are also running a dog-house cooler out of sight. We have a play buggy with a 2180cc motor that pulls a camping trailer, and just run the stock dog-house cooler. Going across Kansas in July we hit temp. over 100'  The other thing to remember is to be careful not to over cool the oil. This is almost as bad as running to hot.  Vic.
