Question:--->  I have a 1600 type 1 motor with the original flywheel. I also have access to a metal lathe. Is it feasible to attempt to lighten this flywheel to about 13 pounds, and if so what guidelines should I go by? I don't want to compromise flywheel strength or end up with a piece that is going to flex. How much HP should I gain and will I need to balance the flywheel when finished.
 Thanks, Larry.

Answer:--->  All a light flywheel does is let the RPM increase and decrease quicker. NO HP is gained. No more RPM will be gained. If you start with a flywheel with the fewest balance hole it will become more balanced as Metal is removed. The weight removed from the outer dia. makes a lot more difference then closer in. Remember that the flywheel weight is the only thing keeping you motor rotating the correct direction at low RPM. The wilder the cam the heaver flywheel you need to keep the motor running smoothly at low RPM. Stock 12v flywheel weighs about 17 lbs. Over time we settled for 10 to 12 lbs on off road race cars that never had to run at low RPM. Hot street cars were lightened to 12 to 14 lbs but don't expect a high performance motor to be happy running around town. Vic.
