Question.... > How
the heck do adjust the Generator belt. I don't see any way but to
shim the generator stand or buy a new belt.
Answer.... > It's very simply done with the pulley
connected to the Generator or Alternator. I think the following diagram
will help. Vic.

1st
Turn the Pulley until the notch #1 is at the two o'clock position.
Then with a screwdriver inserted into notch #1 Turn the nut #9
counterclockwise with a 13/16" wrench until the screwdriver
stops the pulley rotating.
Remove the outer 1/2 of the pulley #6 & the #7 shims.
To
Loosen the generator belt, take outer shims #7 and add them to
the inner shims stack #4.
To tighten the belt, remove shims from inner stack #4 &
place them under spacer #8. Be sure the pulley tabs #2 & #5 are
lined up. Then tighten the 13/16" nut #9.
The Pulley must have the correct number of shims in it so that when
it is tightened down both halves of the pulley are tight on the
shims. It is important is to let the pulley turn a little as
you are tightening the nut to keep the belt from being pinched at
the top of the pulley grove. |
Tighten the nut #9 a little and let the pulley turn & tighten
& turn. Some pulleys have flats on
the inner hub instead of the tabs #3 & #5. I have never found a
Gen/Alt. pulley that will not hold the load if installed correctly. New
belts will stretch slightly and chrome pulleys must run the belt slightly
tighter.
With the generator belt adjusted properly it will almost turn the motor
over when the 13/16" #9 pulley nut is turned. To tight and the
Gen/Alt. bearings wont last and to loose the belt slippage will wear the
belt out.
The correct belt to use is can be a little confusing as different suppliers
call out different sizes. All we have checked work ok but some need a
couple shims added or removed. See part #29 on this page for VW part
numbers and belt sizes -> #29
If you have a pulley off your old 6 volt system, on a 12 volt Alt/Gen the
vertical alignment will be off about 1/2"
The Generator can be moved in and out quite a lot if belt does not line
up, and the spacer behind the pulley can very in thickness on some
alternators. Some aftermarket Pulleys and Power Pulleys require a
spacer on the crank. Sand Seal Pulley "Spacer Kit"
