Question---> I need to know how
much it is going to cost to rebuild my motor. I have only ran it two years
since "Fast Fred" built it. It has this little clicking sound but just
started smoking a little. I can pull the motor and drop it off Saturday for an
estimate. Fred
Answer---> First off you
setting your self for more problems. There is no way to give you a dollar
figure. Motor #1 -> This motor could need a new set of rings and a
good tune up. Or Motor #2-> might need two new
heads, case, crank, 4-rods and Piston & Cylinders. OK the builder gives you
a wild guess and quotes $475.00. Now it's the first motor you got robed
for just putting a new set of rings. If it's the second motor then there
is no way it can be rebuilt for the quoted price. So the builder does one of two
things. Builds it the right way and surprises you with new bill. Or he patches
it up the best he can for the quoted price. Now either way you the customer gets
had A better way is have the builder tear it down and give you an
estimate for a set price. You then get a realistic estimate along
with a list of parts needed. This way you can have the builder rebuild
it. Take it to another Shop or maybe rebuild it yourself now that every thing
has been checked.. For just the price of the "Tear Down and Check"
you get an accurate dollar amount with no surprises. If you have the same shop
rebuild your motor they often have no cost for the "Tear Down &
Check" Rebuild
