Question....> I was riding in my 71 super beetle and smelled gas. when I opened the hood I could see where there was trail of gas running from the carb. What might this be due to? How much does one usually pay to have a carb rebuilt? should I do it myself.

Bob

Answer.... > Most Likely a float sticking. But the gas would normally run into the motor not out in the engine compartment. Make sure the brass inlet tube is tight in the carb top. (where the fuel line goes on)
Pull the throttle about 1/2 way down and push back & forth. If it is tight then you can rebuild it for less then $10.00 > Rebuild Kit <
If the throttle shaft is loose in the housing then get a new carburetor.       Re-bushing throttle shaft "How to"             New Carbs
