Before wasting any more time, I would suggest removing the shift shaft from the transmission and have a buddy shift the transmission with some vice grips attached to the shift shaft where it comes out of the nose cone (see #63 on page -> http://www.1800vw.bizhosting.com/0.tran.sa.htm ) Just make sure it goes in all gears and does not pop of gear when you accelerate & decelerate. If this checks out ok then the problem is as you suspected " in the shifter " When the transmission is in natural the shifter should be straight up and down. If your jumping out of 2ed & 4th then move the shifter forward so the shift shaft pulls further forwards out of the nose cone. Move the shifter towards the rear if you jumping out of 1st & 3ed. Remember the reverse lock out plate installed w/large curved ramp Up & on Right. Ever now and then the shift shaft (hockey stick) #63 will get bent. When the nose cone is removed the inside portion of the hockey stick should be parallel to the gasket surface. Vic
