Question.... >  I am in the process of rebuilding 1965 VW front and rear brakes. There are spring clips mounted to the backing plates that fall into the notches of the  star nut allowing incremental adjustment and then prevents the star nut from moving after adjustment. On two of my backing plates, one front and one  rear, these springs are rusted/broken off. What can be done to fix this? The springs appear to be welded in place. Are there replacement or retrofitable parts available to correct this? Any help in resolving this would be greatly appreciated!!!  Thanks, Larry

Answer.... >
Yes the Spring clips are often broke or missing. We have never worried about these clips being missing. We always free up the adjusters and reinstall with a small amount of anti-size. We have never had the adjustment change because of a missing spring clips. Some brakes you adjust up tight and back off a couple of clicks, but not VW. On Air cooled VW brakes you must adjust the brakes and then hit the brake pedal hard to center the shoes, then readjust and apply pressure again. Adjust them up until you feel a slight drag on each wheel. We then recommend driving around the block, stopping at each corner. Then jack up the car and check for a slight brake drag, if none is felt, they are to loose and if more then a very slight drag is felt, they are to tight.
