Question:--->  I need to 8-dowel my crank and flywheel. Do you carry the drill jig and what do they cost. I am building an 1835cc motor and see that you recommend 8 doweling. Does the jig come with instructions.?  Jake

Answer:--->  Several company's sell the 8-dowel jigs. Including Empi & BugPack for around $40.00
They come with the jig and 2-drills.
1st you locate the Jig off the stock 4-dowel holes.
2ed you use the largest 8mm drill to locate the correct  location for the smaller drill. (just drill deep enough for the drill point to insure the correct location)
3ed Drill the crank or flywheel with the smaller drill. (Be sure the depth is correct for the dowels you will be using)
4th Drill ream the hole with the 8mm drill. Note: this is the step that will ruin your crank or flywheel.
There is no way you can get the proper dowel fit using this method. The only way to get the proper dowel fit is with the proper reamer. Don't expect a new reamer will ream the hole to the correct size the first time you use it.  The speed you turn the reamer, the speed you feed the reamer and the type of lubrication used will all cause variations in the hole size. Expect to ream at least 8 to10 holes getting the reamer to ream the correct size.  (We use a carbide reamer, but they take a lot more time to size)
If the new holes are not a tight fit and perfectly located, you wasted your time and money. If you plan on doing several dozen cranks & flywheels then get the jig and the proper reamers. Carbide reamers save time and money in the long run. We find well over 50% of all stock 4-dowel cranks and flywheels have loose dowels holes in the flywheels. This is from prying off the flywheels and not using a good flywheel puller.
"See -> Puller" Eight loose dowels are no better then four loose dowels.  If you only have 3 or 4 motors to build, it's best to have this done by an expert.   Vic.
