Question....> Can you put a 12 volt starter and flywheel on a 40hp motor?

Answer.... > Yes you can use the 12v flywheel on your 40HP (6v crank non "0" ring type) motor but you will have to modify the flywheel. The 12v flywheel uses an "O" ring and the ID of the flywheel will need to be enlarged to 2.165" just back to the "O" ring grove. (first part of flywheel to slide on the crank) The 6v trany. bell housing will need a small amount of metal removed for the larger 12v flywheel to fit without rubbing. Spray paint the inside of the bell housing and then slide the motor with the 12v flywheel almost home, then turn the crank from the rear. This will show you where to grind. Go slow, as the amount of metal to remove is not very much. Get a 6 to 12 volt starter bushing (#24) and a 12v starter. Remember you will need a 12v coil, 12v choke element, Windshield wiper motor or voltage reducer (#VM00 9344) and 12v bulbs as they burn out.

The other way is to run the 6v starter on 12 volts. If the 6v starter is used only in short burst (not grinding for 3 minutes when your out of gas) the 6-volt starter running on 12 volts will last a long, long time. Vic
