The VW Motor should be called an Air/Oil Cooled motor, not an air cooled motor. Everything you do to increase the power will simultaneously increase the heat. Only so much cooling can be done with air so Oil becomes the essential element for eliminating heat.

Ideal VW Oil temp. Is 180' to 190' & 200' Max     Control Oil Temp--> *ck

220' deg. should be Max. red/line as Head studs start pulling at 300'

Lean Carb Jetting can increase oil temp. 30' easily.

Deck Lid Stand-Offs lower temp. Approximate. 20'

VW Oil Temp. Varies directly with the Air Temp.

                    Oil Temperature

VW Oil cooler needs lots of air and will not cool properly when aftermarket cooler is placed on the
frame. A better place is in front of the Air intake.

Celsius ----------------I------------ Fahrenheit
..160c -----------------I----------------- 320'
..148.8c ---------------I----------------- 300'
..121c -----------------I----------------- 250'
..104.4c ---------------I----------------- 220'
..93.3c ----------------I----------------- 200'
..87.7c ----------------I----------------- 190'
..82.2c ----------------I----------------- 180'
..79.4c ----------------I----------------- 175'
..60c ------------------I----------------- 140'

It makes a difference where on the block your picking up the oil temp. Check the gage to see if it is reading accurate. Timing and Jetting make a big difference. Check out these things 1st before you start adding coolers and changing fans, pulleys etc. High Compression motors run slightly hotter.

Make sure the sound dreading on the fire wall is tight. If loose it can pull back an close off the fan intake. Make sure no rags, critters, or built up dirt are in the fan or on the cylinders. If the fan housing was designed to use the shutters, make sure they are in place and working. It is far better to tie them wide open then use ones that might not open properly.

If you play in the mud it's a good Idea to wash the fan and cylinders. Start with a cold motor. Start it up and put a good stream of water in the fan intake, rev the motor and the fan will sling the water across the cylinders and clean off the mud. Note: Never do this if the motor is hot. If you play in tall grass, use a large area screen over the intake.

                     Oil Pressure

Normal Oil Pressure is 42 psi & Min = 28 psi  Oil pressure adjustable Kit > order

Oil Pressure above [ 30 SAE 70' at 2500 rpm]      VDO Oil Pressure Gage 0-80 psi --> "Quote  $32.95

Oil Pressure Warning Light comes on between 2-6 psi. Oil warning light was Green up to 1969

Oil Block-Off  for external cooler is "Out of top fitting & In the Lower Fitting" ck*

Oil Quantity is 5.3 pints or 2.5 Liters  ( 3qts is enough to do Motor and oil bath air cleaner )

High -Volume oil pumps are the American way. If a little is good, more must be better. But a large high-volume oil pump can be a bad idea unless you are running a race car. On motors with correct clearances, all it does is pump oil thru the bypass, requiring more power, heating and air-eating the oil. If the motor is in good shape then forget the monster oil pumps.

Note: All oil coolers are not all the same and coolers made for air conditioning were made for a gas not oil. The VW Fan moves a lot of air (and takes a lot of HP) so don't expect an oil cooler to work bolted to the top of your car. Yes it will do the job at 60mph but not at 20. If you plan on using an electric fan, just make sure it's at least one or two hp. In other words elec. can only be used as a helper not the main air supply.
Off Road Oil Cooler Placement --->*info

We do not have any published figures for maximum VW cylinder head temperatures, But the old Corvair listed a maximum of 575' F.  Most VW Head temp. Kits come with 500'F gages. Keep in mind the stock VW #3 cylinder runs about 30'F hotter then the other 3 cylinders. Head Temperature depends a lot how and where you install the pick up. We always use the trial and error on the  maximum head  temperature we allow on any of our race motors. We keep a close watch on the oil temperature when we set this maximum head temperature.

Add a remote Oil cooler and need to reset the full mark on the dip stick.-> Start the motor and run for several seconds, Then shut it down and check the oil level as soon as the motor stops. It should show up about 1/8" below the full mark if not adjust the amount of oil in the motor until the level shows 1/8" below the full mark then let the motor cool down and make yourself a new full mark for checking when cold.

New Rebuild & Low oil pressure --> This can be one of many things. Lifter bores loose, Oil plunger sticking or clogged oil passages, Gasket thickness under oil pump cover to great. (often you will find 2 or more gaskets stuck together do to the way they made) Overheating, Oil passages not cleaned properly which in turn can ruin a new oil pump shortly after start up. Even wrong size main bearings for crank or case. Loose oil pick-up. Wrong oil pump. Rocker arms & push rods not compatible.

New Case & Low Oil pressure -->  The plunger bore near the flywheel was not seating due to a machining problem. We took a plunger and attached it securely to the end of a tap. Then we applied blueing to the plunger. When the plunger was inserted, spun, and removed, the blueing showed a ridge causing the plunger not to seat. Quality on some new cases is poor, some manufactures make corrections quickly and some don't seem to care. We recommend  checking every new case just like you would check an old case before a rebuild.
