The new VW Long Block is shipped with “NO Oil” in
Motor. (We recommend
using an inexpensive 30wt
oil for break in.)
Parts needed
from old motor. (All
reused parts should be cleaned & checked before using.)
Dual Port intake manifolds End Castings and Dual Port Intake
Manifold, Carburetor
and Air Filter.
Fuel Pump, Fuel pump Bakelite base and fuel pump Push Rod.
Distributor, Distributor
drive with Spring and two lower distributor drive Shims.
Gen/Alt. and Stand plus Crank Pulley and Belt.
Oil Cooler and oil cooler Bracket if used. (Depends on year of
motor.)
Fan Shroud and Cylinder Tin. You will also need the Pressure Plate
and Clutch Disc.
This would also
be a good time to check the old Starter
Bushing in the transmission bell housing.
New Parts
Needed.
Gasket Set and possible the fuel pump Bakelite base as these
often break when removed.
Be Sure to Clean
Oil cooler internally before reusing. (Local Car-Wash if steam
cleaner is not available)
Note: When
installing the distributor drive and the two lower shims it is
imperative the Distributor is Installed
Before Rotating the Crankshaft. Turning the crankshaft without
the distributor installed can destroy
the internal brass distributor drive gear.
Careful you do not drop a shim into motor as it can do major
damage.
Timing must be
set to VW specifications depending on distributor used. If the
Bosch
009 aftermarket
distributor is used the timing should be set with a timing light
to 27 / 31 degrees BTDC.
Check your Crank Pulley
Markings or switch to a aftermarket Degree
Pulley.
Important: The
timing Can Not be set by Ear. As this will cause overheating
and destroy the VW motor.
Be sure there are
no air
leaks in the intake system, as this will cause a lean
mixture that will cause
overheating.
Start motor
quickly. Excessive cranking of new engine is not good for cam
break-in. Once motor fires up
make
sure you have good oil pressure. (Some times a little gas squirted
down carb throat will help start engine
more
quickly) Run a new motor above 1500rpm / 1800rpm for first 20 to
30 minutes.
Absolutely No
Idling and No Over Revving over 2000 rpm for first 20/30 minutes.
Cam Break- In
We recommend
changing oil after break in. Then after motor has cooled
completely we re-check valves.
(Some feel this is un-necessary and skip this step) All Valves are
set with engine dead cold and set to .006”
both intake and exhaust valves. Aftermarket cams should be set
according to cam card that came with cam.
Second oil change
should be after 500/1000 miles and the valves checked once more.
After this oil change we
recommend switching to you favorite brand of oil and recheck
valves after every 2ed or 3ed oil change. We do
not recommend any 5w-? oils, we stay with the 10 or 20w-?
. And since you asked we use 20w-40 Castrol
after break in.
For maximum
engine life always keep timing set
correctly. (Electronic
ignition kit helps) Keep
valves adjusted.
Avoid lean mixtures,
Pay special attention to the air filter and change oil
regularly.
Avoid slow idling
and lugging the VW Air Cooled motor. It’s far better to turn off
the motor when not moving
and it's better to rev motor then lug it under load.
Very Important
-> New Motors are shipped without oil. -> Do not let motor
idle during brake in period.
-> Set timing to specifications (depending on distributor
used)
-> Do Not set timing by ear. ->
Do Not run
Lean mixture or overheating will occur. -> Do not let the VW
Air Cooled motor Idle for long periods or Idle
at very low RPM. -> Better to rev it then Lug. -> Always
keep a good air
filter on engine. (Better air filters are
now available then the stock oil-bath air filter.) -> Run a
large Idiot Light or better yet a Buzzer
on Gen/Alt.
and
oil pressure. The VW motor will overheat very fast if the fan belt
comes off and for this reason we strongly
recommend the Buzzer over the light.

Note:
Some of the New VW cases have the oil pump inlet and outlet
passages in new locations. Make sure the passages in the
case align up to the ones in the
oil pump. Also check
for aluminum flashing in all the cast passages.
