Always disconnect the Battery before installing your new Electronic Ignition module
(also never weld with
the Battery connected) - if battery is left connected the ignition wire may short on a body part causing permanent
damage, welding on the car may also damage the module.
DO
NOT reverse the polarity of the red and black wires. The
Electronic ignition module’s red wire connects
to positive ( + or 15 on Bosch coil). The black wire connects to
negative ( - or 1 on Bosch coil). Remove the condenser and its wire from
vehicle. All other wires are connected to the coil in their
original places. This module is designed for 12V negative ground
applications only.
1. Remove the distributor cap (B).
.
2. Remove the Rotor (C).
3. Remove the points (D) and condenser assembly (E) from the distributor.
4. Remove the Wire (A) from the negative (-) primary terminal of the ignition coil.
5. Install Electronic module (F). Route the red and black wires (G) from the module through the hole in
the Distributor body (H).
Ensure the module locates where the points were originally mounted, using the 4mm x 8mm long socket
head screw supplied. Make sure the module does not interfere with the cam lobe.
6. Install Electronic rotor ( I ) pressing it onto the distributor cam, until it locates,
When the Electronic rotor is pressed all the way down you will have
5/8" of the shaft sticking out of the top of the Electronic
rotor ( I )
7. The square plastic Grommet (J) supplied has a shortened flange on 1 side - This edge should be
mounted up, so as not to interfere with the distributors cap. The black and red wires from the Electronic
module are pulled through the hole in the plastic grommet, which is
pushed into the distributor body (H)
8. The Electronic module black wire goes to the negative (-) side of the coil - the red wire to the positive
(+) or ignition side of the coil
9. Make sure the terminals are properly crimped for a good contact with the red and black wires.
10. The air gap between the Electronic module (F) and Electronic rotor (I) should be approximately
.060 " or 1.5 mm. Make sure the ignition is switched off before checking.
When the Electronic rotor is pressed all the way
down you will have 5/8" of the shaft sticking out of the top of the
Electronic rotor ( I )
11. Reinstall the distributor cap after installing the rotor
(C)
12. For vacuum advance distributor place Silver metal ring supplied over the distributor shaft before
installing the Electronic rotor.
13. If in doubt have a Qualified auto Electrician install your Electronic Ignition.
14. Reset Ignition Timing For more information on setting your timing. click
IMPORTANT
The total resistance in the ignition coil Primary Circuit (coil primary resistance plus any resistor or
resistance wire) must be at least 2.0 Ohms.
When using the Electronic module with a low resistance coil, 0.5 to 0.75 Ohms, a suitable "ballast resistor" must be installed between the ignition switch and coil.
A
suitable resistor would be 1.5 Ohms and 50 Watts.
Stock VW Bosch Coil and the Bosch Blue HD Coil have the resistor built in, but NOT the Bosch Blue
from MEXICO. Mex. coil ck - Ck coil resistance-->

Do not use a low-resistance coil, such
as the MSD or Accel coil - they don’t have enough primary resistance for this application. If you're going to use a low-resistance
coil anyway, install an external ballast resistor that has about 1.4 Ohms resistance between the coil's positive terminal and the ignition
module. Leaving the Ignition Key in the "ON POSITION" when the motor is not running may also damage some
Electronic Ignitions.

When removing the condenser the smart thing to do is to replace the screw to plug up the hole but this
screw is often to long and can hit the internal revolving parts. Either put an extra washer on the screw or
grind it a little shorter for clearance.
There are two rotors that can be used in the Bosch 009 #04033 or #04012 but the #04012 can not be
used with most electronic Ing. Kits.
Dwell is not adjustable (for the most part) when running Electronic ignition.
Dwell angle is a measure of the duration of time that the primary circuit of the ignition system is closed to energize the primary windings of the coil.
(duration or degrees the points are closed) It's expressed (and measured) in degrees of rotation of the distributor
shaft, hence the use of the term "angle".
The new Ing. lead wires that pass through the side of the distributor fit very loose leaving lots of room for
water and dirt to enter. This is one place we recommend a little silicon seal to fill the gap.
You can locate the 30° BTDC spot on a stock VW Type I crankshaft pulley, which has a 175 mm (6-7/8 in.)
diameter, by measuring, clockwise, from top dead center, around the circumference of the pulley, 45.8 mm, or 1-13/16 in. Make a small white
paint mark there. That's about 30° BTDC. Better yet Install an
aftermarket aluminum pulley of stock diameter, with degree markings
etched on it. Not only does it make setting the timing much easier; it's
also handy for checking valve clearance, etc
Test the charging system's maximum
voltage: If the charging system voltage, measured at the coil's
positive terminal, is more than 14.2 volts at 2,500+ RPM, the voltage
regulator likely needs replacing. Too much voltage can damage the
ignition module
Keep in mind you need a clean surface to work on. The four magnets will attract crud and if not cleaned
before installing they can rub the Electronic module and destroy it in short order. We found a small
staple stuck to the magnet and it destroyed the unit in less then a minute.
