Note: The best time to set the Distributor drive end play is after the crank assembly is dropped in to the case, but before the case half's are bolted together. The end play should be between .006/.030" with distributor installed and pressed all the way down on the dist. clamp. Note: the two different thickness of dist. drive shims used, one very thin and the other very thick (.210") You must use the correct shim / shims in order to get the proper mesh with the brass drive gear. See Manual for proper installation of drive gear. *But Keep in mind that most manuals will tell you the distributor drive, when installed correctly will have the slot 90 degrees to the case parting line, when it will actually be sever degrees past 90 degrees and not as there photos show, When installing start with the slot a few degrees counter clockwise from 90 degrees and as the distributor drive gear slides in, it will go past the 90' and end up rotated several degrees clockwise past the 90'. This is correct and and normal on all VW's T3 dist. shaft with a slightly different gear on the end will go in one tooth short of where the type 1 (Bug) goes. This is so the vacuum unit will clear the fan housing. And the bug (rotor) will be pointing towards the front left wheel or 180' from where the T1 rotor points. Note if you are using the 009 distributor the shaft can be installed just like the Bug since the the vacuum pod is not used.
