Aug of 69 the 1600cc was produced and the motor number started with "B" "1300cc motor used in 1966 & 1200cc up to 66"
* Curb weight... Sedan = 1764 lbs. Convertible = 1852 lbs. Ghia = 1852 lbs.
HP stayed the same 53hp as first appeared in 1967 and Still used single port heads. "1971 Dual Port heads & new 34 PICT-3 carburetor"
First year for Rear widow defogger with electric heating element wires embedded in glass. "Dual Oil Relief replaced the single 8-1970"
First full year of IRS Double-jointed rear axle to improve handling.
Ignition lock is combined with steering wheel lock in column.
External gas tank filler with lock and flap release under the right side of the dash panel.
Front hood release is now located in the glove box.
First year for the day/night rear view mirror and the warm air outlets in the base of the doors were moved rearward
Third year of 12-volt electrical system and the 1st full year of the IRS rear suspension  "Last of swing Axel rear suspension was in 7/68"

1969 was IRS and Final Gear Raito of  4.125, 4-lug wheels, 4-lug wheels started in 8/67.  Same IRS rear suspension that started in late 8/1968  Optional Auto Stick final drive stayed at 4.375

Motor Number stamped under generator support, 66-on used code letter preceding number.

Parts are very easily changed so we recommend you keep track of the part numbers from the Carburetor (normally on the side of the carb) Distributor (9-diget number on the distributor body), Engine Number (just below the firing order under the Gen/Alt Stand) and know if it's 6 or 12 volt and if you 12v system is Gen or Alt.    Note: Alternator replaces Gen. in 8/73

The Above information holds true mainly for the US export models that were shipped to the United States, since the VW was produced and sold all over the world please use with caution. VW often made changes in the 8th month so it is best to determine the year from the chassis number. 

1200cc produced in Europe had an Engine number starting with "D" & 1300cc used "AB"
"AD" were 1600cc with 50hp & Aug of 1970 "AE" was used for the 1600cc 50hp SB
