  Chassis numbers : 8/67=118 000 001 - 7/68=118 1016 100 and Motor Number started with "H"
* 1500cc/actual 1493cc * 83mm bore/69mm stroke * 7.5:1comp ratio * 94.5" wheelbase *
* Curb weight... Sedan = 1764 lbs. Convertable = 1852 lbs. Ghia = 1852 lbs.
HP stayed the same 53hp as first appeared in 1967 & Still used single port heads. 
One-piece bumpers replaced the bumpers with over riders and bumper height was raised.
Head restraints combined with front seat backrest. & 1st year Auto-stick was available.
New External gas tank filler with spring-loaded flap along with push-button ft hood catch.
Beginning of Fresh air ventilating system & collapsible steering column.
First year for exhaust emission control system.
New flattened door handles with built in trigger release.
Start of back-up/brake lights & turn signals in single larger tail light housing.
Second year of 12-volt electrical system and the beginning of the IRS rear suspension in Aug of 68
"Volkswagen" name plate on engine lid instead of engine size.

Early 68 still head Swing Axle Transmission with long axles and Final Gear Raito of  4.125,
4-bolt wheels started in 8/67
3ed full year for Ball joint front end replaced King pin front suspension in 8/65
Bolt Center Wheels,  Late 68 models had IRS rear suspension and 4-bolt wheels. Tran. final drive ratio stayed at 4.125
 Optional Auto Stick final drive was 4.375 

Chassis Number stamped on frame tunnel under rear seat.
Motor Number stamped under generator support, 66-on used code letter preceding number.

Parts are very easily changed so we recommend you keep track of the part numbers from the Carburetor (normally on the side of the carb) Distributor (9-diget number on the distributor body), Engine Number (just below the firing order under the Gen/Alt Stand) and know if it's 6 or 12 volt and if you 12v system is Gen or Alt.         Note: Alternator replaces Gen. in 8/73

The Above information holds true mainly for the US export models that were shipped to the United States, since the VW was produced and sold all over the world please use with caution. VW often made changes in the 8th month so it is best to determine the year from the chassis number
