  Chassis numbers : 8/66=117 000 001 - 7/67=117 999 000 and the Motor Number started with "H"
* 1500cc/actual 1493cc * 83mm bore/69mm stroke * 7.5:1comp ratio * 94.5" wheelbase *
* Curb weight... Sedan = 1764 lbs. Convertible = 1852 lbs. Ghia = 1852 lbs.
HP was increased from 50 to 53hp & displacement from 1300cc to 1500cc
Single unit headlights w/chrome rim used with indented front fender.
Dual Brake system introduced: front & rear operated independently.
First year for back-up lights & parking lights were incorporated into front turn signal.
First year for locking buttons on inner doors.
12-volt electrical system introduced in 8/66 with 36-amp battery.
"Volkswagen" name plate on engine lid instead of engine size.

1967 still head Swing Axle Transmission but went to long axles in Aug.  / IRS started in 1968
2ed full year for Ball joint front end replaced King pin front suspension as of 8 / 65
Rear Track went from 51.2" to 53.2" in 8th month due to longer axles.
Final Gear Raito increased from 4.375 to  4.125, 5-bolt 205mm Bolt Center Wheels, 4-bolt started in 8/67
Gas Filler under front hood, no back up lights & still used short seat back. No lock on glove box.

Chassis Number stamped on frame tunnel under rear seat.
Motor Number stamped under generator support, 66-on used code letter preceding number.

Parts are very easily changed so we recommend you keep track of the part numbers from the Carburetor (normally on the side of the carb) Distributor (9-diget number on the distributor body), Engine Number (just below the firing order under the Gen/Alt Stand) and know if it's 6 or 12 volt and if you 12v system is Gen or Alt.       Note: Alternator replaces Gen. in 8/73

The Above information holds true mainly for the US export models that were shipped to the United States, since the VW was produced and sold all over the world please use with caution. VW often made changes in the 8th month so it is best to determine the year from the chassis number.
