  Chassis numbers : 8/64=115 000 001 - 7/65=115 979 200 and Motor Number started with-out a prefix Letter. 1200cc/actual 1192cc and listed as 40 HP   "1300cc Started in 1966" "1500cc started in 1967"  <> Note: 1200cc & 1300cc were used in Europe until the end of German Production
Production =  288,583 & Convertible 7,848 and priced  $1563 & Convertible $2053
New instrument panel. Larger Windshield. Larger rear window. 
Frame head reinforced. Front turn signals moved to top of fenders. Rear deck lid redesigned.
Heat control levers mounted on Tunnel & heater efficiency improved.
Push-Button catch on engine lid. Swivel mounted sun visors.
Flat type accelerator replaces roller type. Horizontal air inlets replaced vertical inlets on convertibles.
New dished steering wheel. Radio grill moved left in front of driver. Third and forth gear ratio changed.
Second year for control arm bushings changed to needle roller bearings. Second year for Anti-sway bar.
Ball joint front end replaces King pin front suspension as of  8 / 1965

1192cc * 77mm bore/64mm stroke with 7:1 compression ratio listed as 40hp
40hp heads can be recognized because intake comes straight up, unlike the 1300cc and later single port heads where the intake manifold bolts to the head at a slight inward angle. (towards the center of motor)
1965 still head 6-volt electrical system. 12-volt did not start until 8/66 
Swing Axle
Transmission still had short  axles, same _____ Final Gear Raito, 5-bolt 205mm Wheels Bolt 4-lug wheels did not start until 68  , Older type dual glass head lights. Gas Filler still under front hood, no back up lights & still used short seat back. No lock on glove box.  
"IRS started in 1968"

Chassis Number stamped on frame tunnel under rear seat.
Motor Number stamped under generator support, 66-on used code letter preceding number.

Parts are very easily changed so we recommend you keep track of the part numbers from the Carburetor (normally on the side of the carb) Distributor (9-diget number on the distributor body), Engine Number (just below the firing order under the Gen/Alt Stand) and know if it's 6 or 12 volt and if you 12v system is Gen or Alt.     Note: Alternator replaces Gen. in 8/73   Timing Information 65   and    Wiring Information

The Above information holds true mainly for the US export models that were shipped to the United States, since the VW was produced and sold all over the world please use with caution. VW often made changes in the 8th month so it is best to determine the year from the chassis number.
