Model year changes started in 8th month of the year instead of Jan of each year.
1963
  Chassis numbers : 8/62=4,846,836 - 7/63=5,677,118 and the Motor Number with no Prefix Letter  (Prefix Letter started in 67 w/H)
Production = 209,747 & Convertible: 7,377 Price = $1595 & Convertible: $2095
* 1200cc/actual 1192cc  & listed as 40hp    * 77mm bore/64mm stroke * 7.1comp ratio * 94.5" wheelbase *
6mm Oil pump studs (used until 68) 6v with 180mm pressure plate & flywheel (12v started in 67 with different Flywheel)
  28PICT carb accelerator pump stroke increased from 1.1 to 1.4cc / 10.6 gallon gas tank and used 560x15 tires (std VW size)
40hp heads can be recognized because intake comes straight up, unlike the 1300cc (1966) and later single port heads where the intake manifold bolts to the head at a slight inward angle. (towards the center of motor)
Fan Housing is redesigned for fresh air heating also change in muffler and heat exchangers.
Improved spring plate bushings and clutch cable lengthened 10mm to 2260mm/88.98" in length. Clutch springs improved heat resistance
Head liner changed from wool cloth to leatherette. Window guides changed to Nylon and sunroof folding handle added.
"Wolfsburg" crest discontinued and "VW" emblem was added in center of hood near windshield. 
1963 still head 6-volt electrical system. 12-volt did not start until 8/66 
Swing Axle
Transmission still had short  axles, same _____ Final Gear Raito, 5-bolt 205mm Wheels Bolt 4-lug wheels did not start until 68  , Older type dual glass head lights. Gas Filler still under front hood, no back up lights & still used short seat back. No lock on glove box.  
"IRS started in 1968"
Chassis Number stamped on frame tunnel under rear seat.
Motor Number stamped under generator support, 66-on used code letter preceding number.

Parts are very easily changed so we recommend you keep track of the part numbers from the Carburetor (normally on the side of the carb) Distributor (9-diget number on the distributor body), Engine Number (just below the firing order under the Gen/Alt Stand) and know if it's 6 or 12 volt and if you 12v system   Timing 61/64 information   and   Wiring iformation

The Above information holds true mainly for the US export models that were shipped to the United States, since the VW was produced and sold all over the world please use with caution. VW often made changes in the 8th month so it is best to determine the year from the chassis number.
